Installing Fence Across Driveway

8/1/2018

Fencing driveways lead to homeowner’s enhanced privacy. The fencing needs to be done well since foot and vehicle traffic tends to be more here. Installing fence across driveway needs to be done after a series of processes that are important. For example, whether a fence should be tall or short. This is usually regulated by the municipalities’ rules. In most places, fences have a maximum height of 3 feet.

Fencing Permit

Before installing fence across the driveway, enquire whether a permit is needed. The permit is acquired from the relevant authorities such as the local zoning departments. It will indicate among others, the fence’s location, ownership details, and materials to be used.

Materials to be Used

Various materials can be used. These include aluminum, vinyl, chain-link, wood, metal etc. The choice of materials to be used depends upon many factors, mainly cost, aesthetics, supplier, durability, availability, maintenance cost and installation process.

Fence Posts installation in a driveway

Before installing fence across the driveway, you can set fence posts. This can be done by boring holes in the driveway then setting the posts. Alternatively, one may wish to have a temporary fence across the driveway. In that case, instead of boring holes, one can get post brackets. The post brackets can be secured to the driveway then posts installed on top. This will be more convenient since the fence might get destroyed, for example when hit by a car. If that happens, replacement of the post brackets will be easier than posts installed on the dug holes. After installing the posts, rails can then be attached to the posts.

Fence posts installation in a driveway can be done as follows:
•    Mark a line indicating the posts’ spots. Use a string tightened along the line.
•    Boreholes on the marked spots. Use a hammer drill. Then use a jackhammer to jackhammer the concrete.
•    Remove the small pieces of concrete from the hole.
•    Install the posts in each hole. Add gravel in the hole then concrete to render the post firm. Also, plump the posts.
•    After that, you can attach horizontal rails between the posts.

Invisible Fencing Across a Driveway

In some instances, an invisible fence can be installed under a driveway. This keeps your pets within the perimeter of your property. Your pets need to be trained and have a transmitter collar.

On a gravel or dirt driveway, run the wire through a garden hose or a PVC pipe. The pipe is then laid on a scored groove then buried with the dirt or gravel.

If you have a concrete driveway, create a groove then lay the boundary wire on the trench. The wire is then covered with a waterproofing compound.

Conclusion

Installing fence across driveway can thus be done in a convenient way to ensure one’s privacy, security, aesthetic or other needs. It can also be important in confining pets and prevent unwelcome animals from intruding into one’s property. Fencing is done according to one’s specific preferences, choice, and convenience.
